“In the realm of architecture, a 5-day design workshop was initially conceived as a brief learning session for 13 students—a window to immerse themselves in a specific set of design theories, techniques, and philosophies. However, as I perused the diverse student list, realizing participants hailed from different corners of Korea and even other nations like Japan, the UK, and the US, I anticipated that this workshop would transcend the conventional, and that there would be a different meaning to this gathering.”
This gathering, representing a mosaic of unique stories, diverse backgrounds, and varied interests cultivated in different environments, promised to be more than a traditional learning experience. Envisioned as a short getaway from the practical challenges of architecture encountered in schools or offices, the workshop deliberately omitted the usual context of site, program, and user considerations. Instead, the focus shifted towards a new context, the art of form-making techniques.
By introducing this fresh perspective, students were given the freedom to express their interests within the framework from various techniques. This departure from the norm facilitated a space for uninhibited creativity and a departure from the routine challenges faced in architectural practice. What transpired was not just a workshop but a dynamic platform where participants could share, learn, and collaborate rather than design in isolation.
Through numerous discussion sessions, the workshop underwent a transformation, becoming a hub where diverse minds seamlessly intertwined. In the design world, it's not uncommon for designers to develop their interests and ways of thinking influenced by the schools they attend. Such influences often persist throughout their careers, creating a framework that shapes their approach to design. However, this workshop emerged as a unique platform designed to break free from these established patterns. It provided an opportunity for students to step beyond the confines of their familiar ways of thinking. Driven by curiosity about what other schools were teaching and emphasizing, participants actively sought to broaden their perspectives on architecture.
Over the course of just five days, what initially began as a focused educational endeavor evolved into an enriching experience. The workshop became a brief yet intensive exploration that not only introduced a new form-making technique but also cultivated a profound sense of community. As the workshop progressed, the horizons of architectural thinking expanded organically, and participants found their vision broadening, allowing them to explore their individual interests within the vast landscape of architecture.

In the dynamic realm of design, the significance of archiving and representing holds paramount importance, serving as the nexus between ideation and effective communication. Designers, in their quest for optimal solutions, engage in a continuous cycle of endless iterations. The iterative process is the most efficient way in which designers draw closer to the ultimate answer for a given project. This iterative nature is deeply rooted in the subjectivity inherent in design, where the rationalization of one's personal interests becomes a method for crafting something truly unique and innovative.
At the end of each workshop, Henge, an online platform designed for the organization of 3D models, played a vital role. Serving as an archive, Henge provides a structured repository for design concepts, facilitating easy access and retrieval. Its visual and quick online capabilities become instrumental in presenting these designs to both the design community and a broader audience. The act of archiving is not merely a logistical task; it is a strategic decision that acknowledges the transient nature of ideas and the need for a robust repository. This archive becomes a living record, preserving the evolution of design thinking and offering a reference point for future exploration. Participants also capitalized on the platform's highly interactive interface to represent their designs to a live audience. This intentional effort aimed to translate the abstract into the tangible, ensuring effective communication of the design's essence. The selection of the most fitting representation became an art form, aspiring for clarity, resonance, and a seamless connection with the intended audience.
In essence, the marriage of archiving and representing in design encapsulates a holistic approach to the creative process. It acknowledges the iterative nature of design thinking, the subjectivity embedded in the ideation process, and the importance of effective communication. As designers navigate this intricate process, platforms like Henge emerge as indispensable tools, facilitating the archival and presentation processes, thereby elevating the discipline of design.
